CBC News: U.S. diplomat takes over for Garner in Iraq 'The U.S. reconstruction team seems to have had little impact on rebuilding in Iraq. Basic services such as water and electricity are intermittent, and Iraqis complain there's no security.'

There was never any doubt that the US would 'win' the war. This was exactly the failure everyone anticipated.

Try finding a greeting card for this occasion : DAVID MACFARLANE 'It says here (and I'm not making this up), that this is National Masturbation Month -- the observance of which is not entirely clear to me.

For one thing, a month seems a little excessive. I would have thought 10 minutes would have done the trick. For another, it's difficult to imagine that masturbation, as a cause, is under-subscribed.'

CBC News: Canada part of huge terror-response drill 'As many as 8,500 people from more than 100 U.S. agencies, the Red Cross and the Canadian government will be involved. It's estimated to cost about $16 million US.'

Duck and cover.

CBC News: Traffic accidents more lethal than war: WHO 'It says nearly 90 per cent of deaths due to injuries take place in poorer countries.'
OK. That's an eye-catching headline. But the quote I include here is the last line in the story but I think it's the most important point.

Hackers: iTunes can be shared over Net
Hackers say they are using iTunes to share their music through the Net--threatening to put Apple in the center of a controversy that the company had hoped to avoid. [CNET News.com]
Ugh. Keep it down, boys.

The Globe and Mail :A diva takes her final bow After a celebrated, 30-year career, mezzo-soprano Catherine Robbin retires from singing to take up teaching. Tonight's concert in Toronto is her last [...] 'Many reserve their highest praise, as do I, for her elegant 1989 recording of Mahler's orchestral songs with the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony (CBC SM5000). This recording, more than any of her others, shows what major recording labels missed. So much Mahler today is about big sound. Robbin's Mahler is pure chamber music -- and the voice seems to emanate from within the orchestra, soft-edged to the winds' crystalline presence, each vowel plainly etched, phrases lovingly shaped.'
As I type Catherine Robbin is performing her final concert at the Gould Studio. Doug's recording it. Neil's been working hard behind the scenes to give her a grand send off. I met Ms. Robbin a couple of times, once when I first joined CBC Records (I think I was finishing up her Schumann - Liederkriese disc) and then again recently when we were working on her last CD. She's one of the most down to earth, unpretentious people I've ever met. Rare in a singer! The disc referred to here is available at our web site. It came out just before I joined the label.

Notes and Tips: Consumer Reports on Apple

Pixar Executives Not Quite Ready to Forsake Others for Disney Alone 'Under a marketing and distribution deal dating to the early 1990's and set to expire in 2005, Pixar splits movie profits equally with Disney, which gets a distribution fee. Mr. Jobs wants more and is renegotiating to keep up to 90 percent of the profit.

For the last five months, Mr. Jobs, a skillful manipulator of his image and that of his company, has artfully dodged speculation regarding a new joint venture. And he was no less evasive in a conference call on earnings last week when an analyst suggested that Mr. Jobs scrap negotiations with Disney and try to acquire its animation division instead. Mr. Jobs suggested something more radical: buying Disney outright. Thinking better of the idea though (especially after the analyst gasped) he added, "I'll just leave that alone."'

Jobs' other gig is running Apple.

Apple Tweaks Microsoft Over a New Computer 'Apple executives took obvious glee last week in noting that the software centerpiece of the Microsoft conference, new graphics software that is scheduled to appear in "Longhorn," Microsoft's 2005 version of its Windows operating system, apes features that have been in Apple's OS X operating system since 2001.'

Rule By Force Alone

When the US overthrew Saddam, they didn't just get rid of the sword of his state but also the entire panoply of mechanisms that kept revolution from happening and the theocrats from taking charge. Faced with the prospect of Islamic rule, the US has only one arrow in its quiver: force. As a senior administration official told the New York Times, "it's clear we are going to have to step in a little more forcefully."

Thus did the US issue an astounding proclamation in the name of freedom. Quoting the Times:

Lt. Gen. David McKiernan, the commander of ground forces in Iraq, issued a proclamation putting Iraq's politicians on notice, saying, "The coalition alone retains absolute authority within Iraq." He warned that anyone challenging the American-led authority would be subject to arrest.

Ah, the sweet sound of liberation! (link)

A very interesting article, well worth reading.
