In Canada it’s okay to say you’re a Liberal After months of attacks by Paul Martin’s camp and the country’s opposition, Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chrétien announced he would be resigning in February 2004. Paul Martin accepted the decision and told his supporters not to ask for a leadership review next year as formerly expected. The lengthy interval before his resignation may allow other Liberals such as John Manley or Allan Rock to pull ahead of Paul Martin in the Liberal leadership race, but for now they are not speaking out. Presumably any leader chosen by the Liberals will have a better chance of election than Kim Campbell as unlike the Progressive Conservatives; the Liberals are ahead in the polls. The February 2004 resignation date also means that Joe Clark can step down from the leadership of the PCs soon without the PC’s leadership convention being upstaging by a Liberal one. 9:15:36 PM ![]() |
