Copyright Board to Canadians: Pay Up! Tomorrow may be the day that the Canadian Copyright Board gives in to the Canadian Private Copying Collective and raises the tariff on digital media to a insanely high level of $0.59 CDN per CD-R or CD-RW and $2.27 per DVD-R or RW!. Similar charges will be applied to MP3 players such as the iPod based on their hard disk or flash memory size. Won't it be great to give money to the Copyright Board each time I back up my data files on a CD-R. Update: While MP3 players with fixed internal storage such as the iPod were hit with fees ranging from $2 to $25 CDN depending on their storage capacity, the tariff on CDs was unchanged and no charge was applied to DVDs. Also the Copyright Board of Canada has ruled that it is legal for Canadians to download music from peer to peer networks but not upload to them, turning Canada into a country of leechers. 11:39:48 PM ![]() |
