Tutorial: Using FrontPage with Radio Weblogs

Saturday, March 02, 2002

Quick Tips:

Inserting JavaScript or other Code into FrontPage - In Normal View, select Insert, Advanced, HTML from the drop down menu and just paste your code into the dialog box. In FrontPage 2002, select Insert, Web Component, Advanced Controls, HTML and then paste your code into the dialog box.

Creating links to downloadable files - You can create a ZIP, import the file into your web and link to it on a page. When someone clicks on the link, they will automatically be able to download it.  I recommend ZIP files because if you link to a file, like a Word document, and the user has that program installed on their PC then the browser will try to launch the program associated with that file extension.

Spacing

Single Space = Shift + Enter (Line Break)
Double Space = Enter (Paragraph)

Displaying Code Tags - Choose View from your toolbar and click Reveal Tags. Your code will be displayed on the page. This is especially useful when dealing with nested tables. You can also click the backwards "P" icon to the far left of your toolbar to show where code (such as ASP code) is on your page.

Opening a link in a new window - When you create a hyperlink, in the Create Hyperlink dialog box, click on the little pencil icon next to the word Target Frame and choose New Window from the list of Common Targets.

Set No Borders - Insert this code right after your <body> tag:

TOPMARGIN=0 LEFTMARGIN=0 MARGINHEIGHT=0 MARGINWIDTH=0

The last two tags are for compatibility with Netscape. You can also set the page margins by right-clicking on the page, select Page Properties and click on the Margins tab.

Get rid of annoying pop-up ads

This isn't a FrontPage related topic (unless you create pop-up ads with FrontPage) but it's one that annoys me enough to write a quick blurb on it.

I think that one of the most annoying things on the Internet today is when you go to a site and it's kind enough to spawn pop-up advertisement windows when you enter or leave the site.  When I'm surfing the 'net I'm looking for information quickly and I don't have time to spend closing all these extra windows.

If you're like me, and find this practice annoying, there are several things you can do about it.  One is to add sites that generate these to your list of Restricted Sites in Internet Explorer. To do this:

  1. Choose Tools, Internet Options from your IE menu.
  2. Click on the Security tab and then click Restricted Sites
  3. Click the Sites button.
  4. Add in (one at a time) the sites that you don't want displayed. then click Ok when you're done.

Some sites that you may want to include in your list are:

*.adclick.com
*.doubleclick.com
*.doubleclick.net
  ads*.zdnet.com
  ads*.cnet.com
  ads.microsoft.com

The Icons of FrontPage

Every so often someone sends me an email asking what all the little icons next to their files mean when they open their web site in FrontPage.  Here's an article by a friend of mine that describes the Icons in FrontPage.

Better manage your web site

Which is the hardest part, designing your web site or maintaining it?  The answer is to design your web site in such a way that maintaining it becomes easier.

Look at the way Radio works for a minute.  As a user, all you really need to do to keep your site going is to type your content and click "Post to Weblog".  Everything else, including the layout, styles, fonts and other elements,  is handled for you. If you want to make a global change to your Weblog you can change the templates, stylesheets, theme etc. and they are instantly applied.  Radio takes care of the design AND maintenance for you.

But what if you're not using Radio or you want to create your own designs and layouts?  How do you create a site that's easy to maintain or make global changes when you need them?

The answer? You can use FrontPage to achieve this same flexibility that Radio has. As an introduction to this topic, I added two stories to my site on how to use Include Pages in your web site and using Cascading Style Sheets in your web site. I'll be adding more entries as soon as I get time.

BTW, I wrote both of these stories using FrontPage and then posted them to my Weblog.  I'll be talking about how to do this and other things with Frontpage in my next article.  Stay tuned.
