Networld+Interop, Day 1

Good day all. We've recovered from last night's festivities, and we're on the show floor. Here's a quick sampling of some interesting announcements seen thus far.

  • Nortel announces single-box edge device. Going where many vendors have gone before, Nortel appears to have been bitten by the one-box fits all bug. The company today is announcing the Contivity 1010, 1050 and 1100 gateways, which will host IP routing, VPN, QoS, and firewall services into one box. This should be interesting.
  • WorldCom to offer security services. Speaking of one-stop-shops, it looks like WorldCom will begin offering managed security services by none other than Internet Security Systems. ISS of course, won't replace WorldCom's existing firewall and VPN services. Rather, the company will focus on IDS, antivirus, and vulnerability assessment, giving WorldCom a very well-rounded suite of managed solutions.
  • Vendors to ship new cast of 802.11a products. The time for 54Mbps has most certainly arrived. At the show this week, vendors such as Agere and Proxim are all shipping a new batch speedy wireless hardware. Proxim for example, is announcing its first PCI adapter, designed to connect WLAN access points. Likewise, Agere began shipping a radio and antenna set for its Orinoco WLAN line.
  • Microsoft forms security services alliance. Ok, Microsoft really is serious about its Trustworthy Computing initiative. Today the Redmond Wash.-based company announced a partnership with managed security services provider Foundstone. Basically, Microsoft hopes offer Foundstone's IDS and vulnerability scanning services to its Financial Services Group customers. Obviously, this is a good move, since Microsoft hired Foundstone to help it with its .NET security woes a short time ago.
