O'Reilly Emerging Technology Conference - day 1

Good day all. If you aren't as lucky as Don MacVittie, who gets to attend the The O'Reilly Emerging Technology Conference (going on now in Santa Clara, CA), don't worry. Mr. MacVittie has graciously agreed to give us a daily rundown on interesting technologies and happenings from the show. What follows is his first report. Enjoy.

Well, the first day of the show has wound down. Today was mostly tutorials; the show floor opens tomorrow. People were still straggling in the last time I poked my head into the registration area.

I stopped in for the second half of a tutorial by Don Box on XML, XPATH, WSDL, UDDI, and a few more acronyms I'm pretty certain he made up.

He's an engaging speaker with a knowledge of the subject matter. The attendees were much more comfortable once he helped them understand at least some of the pitfalls they'll run into implementing web services.

The conference is running 802.11 in almost every area. You can get to the Internet from anywhere on the show floor, and in the presentation rooms - although I'm not certain such connectivity in a presentation room is a great idea for the speaker.

Well, off to get some rest for tomorrow's show floor opener.

Don.
