Adventures in Technology: Episode  #3 part I

Steph attempts to add a Nomadix Gateway to an 802.11b WLAN.

As you may recall, the first episode of Adventures in Technology featured intrepid geeks John and Steph as they set-up an experimental 802.11b WLAN. We did not experience instant success. However, we called in Chris Erickson who merely touched our recalcitrant access point and it lit right up. Electronic gadgets do seem to love Chris.

As I type (offline I might add), I am on hold with Internet Technical Support. Our Cable Modem that we had so lovingly set-up is flashing yellow which means it's not activated. So first step is to get the thing reactivated.

How come these things are never ever easy?

Well as I wait listing to Classical Music over the phone, I might as well explain what a Nomadix box will do. Oooh - the support guys just picked up the phone! After some conversation, it turns out my modem got turned off during an audit sweep. I just got it reactivated so its little light should start blinking green instead of yellow.

So while I wait for yellow to turn to green I'll get back to the Nomadix box. It functions as encrypted authentication gateway. So all those 802.11b security issues that have received so much press are not an issue. Our access point is wide open, but the Nomadix box is right between the access point and the network. So as soon as a users hits our access point they hit the secure Nomadix box. Very slick.

Well - total bummer. The access point and cable modem don't seem to be working together. sigh.

How come these things are never ever easy?

Time to call Chris...

Whoa - I AM brilliant! I rebooted the access point and now all is well. I am such a technology stud! Now on the Nomadix part of our show!

So now, I've plugged the Nomadix box into the cable modem and the access point in the Nomadix. Things don't look right - the little blinky lights on the access point are not behaving correctly. The ethernet light is not blinking. Hmmm.

This is interesting - I can actually get a web page some of time but it's very slow...Now it really is time to call Chris...

Neither Chris nor John are at there desks. Don't they realize this is an emergency! Looks like I'll have to bail until I can talk to them.

How come these things are never ever easy?
