Adventures in Technology: Episode #3 part II
Steph attempts to add a Nomadix Gateway to an 802.11b WLAN.
Yesterday's attempts failed but I'm back flailing (and still failing) again. Today Mom is visiting so maybe she'll bring good luck.
Anyhoo, Chris suggested that I might have a bad ethernet cable. So I swapped with a known winner and of course, no luck. I rebooted the access point and Nomadix box several times. Still no luck. The green blinky lights on the access point just aren't blinking - heck they're not even on (except for the power indicator).
Looks like Mom didn't improve my luck.
So thinking about blinky lights I looked closer at the Nomadix box. The network blinky light is doing great - it's blinking in unison with the cable modem which indicates that it is receiving network traffic. However, the subscriber link is not blinking at all. Hmmm - nothing is going out. No wonder the access point lights aren't blinking - they're not getting anything.
So Chris has now suggested that I clean the RJ45 connector on the back of the Nomadix box with a pencil eraser. Do you know how hard it is to find a pencil eraser in this day and age? I'm off on a search.
I'm back - I found a spiffy wire brush that's made for just this sort of thing - neat! However, it didn't work. sob...
I've been IM'ing (technology is sometimes wonderful) with John Barnhardt. He suggested I rule out a bad access point (ours is a bit flaky) by plugging my PC directly into the Nomadix box. How brilliant! I did that - and again no action.
But wait - John has a theory (quoted from his IM session):
Methinks maybe 2 issues: crossover cable, IP addressing. The tricky part here is that I can reconfig the box while in your office, then won't be able to access it any more until it's on the cable modem network. It could do DHCP on CM network but we wouldn't know what its address was for admin then... We haven't received a static address from Internet on the cable modem network have we?
Why don't we do this: put Nomadix back in your office, I'll send Chris an e-mail to see if he can get us a static address, and give me a call when you have a chance to figure out next steps.
Well - we're getting somewhere.
This stuff is never easy! Plug and play! Hah!
