This evening, I zoomed over to the Bear Tooth for the movie Attla. The film tells the story of Alaska sprint dog racing legend, George Attla. Attla grew up in Huslia (very very Bush Alaska) in the 40's and 50's. He contracted tuberculosus as a child, spent seven years at Mt. Edgecome hospital in Sitka, and finally came home when he was a young man. His right knee was permanently fused as a result of the tuberculosus and he walked with a very pronounced limp. Which I remember quite well.

Anyhoo, the movie is really great. I was surprised at just how good it is. It was shot back in the late 70' and not on a big budget. But, it is a real treat - extremely well acted and compelling.

It captures Alaska as it used to be and still was when I was growing up. It's also great to see a movie about Alaska actually filmed in Alaska. Alaska is very unique. Our landscape truly does not look like Washington State or southern Canada - two common Alaska "stunt double" locales.

The dog mushing scenes were absolutely killer. Attla was an advisor during filming and it shows. There is absolutely nothing better in the whole world than being on a sled (or skis!) behind fast moving and well trained dogs. And this movie really nails just how cool it is...

And who belongs to this pair of ears?!

Those very cute ears belong to our neighborhood pregnant moose!

She spent most of the afternoon hanging out in our front yard - right off the living room. I should have invited her in for tea!

You really can't blame her for being a slug all afternoon - I bet that when you're a moose in the motherly way, you tote quite a load...

I think she's become quite fond of our yard: It's secluded, quiet, and has lots of "browse" - although we have noticeably less "browse" than we did a month ago. Our moose has definitely been eating for two or three. Our shrubs and bushes have been pruned down to virtually nothing.
