The Ski Boy and I are off to an evening of hobnobbing and Oscar viewing at the Concert Association's Annual Oscar Gala!

Peter and I are both very dressed up - we look quite smashing. I think the couture coup de gras is Peter's very classy Tigger tie!

The Iditarod gets all the press, but I must admit that I have a fondess for sprint sled dog racing. The Fur Rendevous race is a 25 mile circuit that starts in downtown Anchorage, follows the trail system out to the East Anchorage hillside, loops back around and follows the same trail back. The course is raced for three successive days. This year's winner average a little under 88 minutes each day. Think about just how fast that is...

I grew up watching the Rondy race - sprint dogs are soooo fast and smooth. When they go by, they're powerful, fast, and quiet.

I took these pictures, off the trail, down by Mulcahy.

Here's an old guy! But he and his team are hauling patootie.

Mushers work very hard during a race - they rarely just stand on the runners! They're pumping with one leg or actually running up the hills (and there are some big hills). So, this old guy is pretty impressive. Sprint mushing is a young person's sport...

"Can you see any dog teams yet?!"

This team was really moving. They're digging so hard, that the snow is spraying everywhere.

Check out the German Shorthair mixes in the front.

There is some heavy duty tongue action going on within this dog team!

The guys just hanging around waiting for the dogs to zoom by. I really like this picture - it's an Alaska picture for several reasons:

1) Obviously fit guys taking a break while on their Tour of Anchorage training ski. (The Tour is next week).

2) The Chester Creek trail is so scenic - and cuts right through town. So, the guys, skiing their 40K prep, are trying to stay ahead of the dog teams who share the same trail for about 10 K. This bridge is where the dog trail and the ski trail diverge, so the skiers can take a breather.

3) Everyone looks so casual about the whole thing. As if it's normal to be on a 40K ski and then take break, pull over and watch the World Championship Sprint Dog Races go by...

4) And they're a good looking bunch of guys!
