I did a ton of driving today through ranchland and farmland. Big pretty country with some interesting sites:

This tractor with its barbed wire load was just sitting by the road:

I had a great afternoon - I left Winfield a little after Noon (yup - totally slept in) and headed straight 50 miles straight East to Grenola - a little town of 256 people. Grenola is our ancestral stomping grounds. We had a family ranch there until the mid-80's. It is a gorgeous area - the tall grass prarie and the rolling Flint Hills are spectacular. I just love it.

Since I was in that neck of the woods, I thought I'd do some geocaching. And amazingly, there are a few geocaches within about a 30 mile radius of Grenola. Oh boy!!!!

My favorite cache was the Moline Lake Cache located, appropriately enough near the Moline Lake which is about two miles northwest of the little town of Moline. Who knew that Moline had a lake???!!!!

It took me forever to find the west side of the lake (the geocache was only accessible from the west). There were no signs. I had to navigate via my gps and kept wandering down dirt roads that ran between pastures. And those were big pastures - so I did a ton of driving. But I saw lots of cows and horses and beautiful land. So, I wasn't too upset.

Well I finally found the right little road that led to the general area of the geocache. I then bushwacked my way through about 1/2 mile of brush and hills until I popped out into nice meadow on top of hill with a great view of the surrounding Flint Hills and ranches. Once I reached this point, the going was easy and I found the cache within a few minutes.

A real bonus with the meadow location was that my cell phone worked!!!! My cell phone does not work here in Winfield. But 50 miles east of Winfield, in the middle of virtually nowhere, I miraculously got cell phone reception. So, I promptly called both Mom and Peter! I spent about 30 minutes on the phone in the meadow.

So, here's a picture of me and the Moline Lake geocache:

It's the Moline Lake Geocache - very nicely hidden at the base of some sort of coniferous tree. See - Kansas has conifers too!!!!!

Fortunately, I found Moline Lake, its picnic grounds and potty just in time!!!! This facility may look somewhat skanky to you, but beggers can't be choosers and I thought it looked wonderful!!!!!

Oh - and the little green potty sitting there in front of the big white potty, is the Big Flush geocaching travel bug. I brought him with me to Kansas!
