Here's a grain elevator in Oxford, Kansas with a sense of humor:

And this is my favorite sign in the whole world:

The Pecan Grove is one of my favorite places in Winfield. A delightful secluded park area to the south of the county fairgrounds. The Walnut River - which is actually a pretty big river - borders the south edge of the grove.

So, given my attachment to the area, I had to do the No Road Walnut River geocache that is located in the Pecan Grove. The cache itself was a pretty easy find. But while caching, I discovered the massive remains of an old bridge that crossed the river. I never knew those structures were there.

Here are the remnents:

And here's the succesful happy geocacher:

Sometimes, the challenging part of Geocaching doesn't even start until you arrive at the coordinate location. You can be standing at what is supposed to be ground zero, and there is absolutely nothing out of the ordinary. Nothing to indicate that a cache might be nearby.

It doesn't help that sometimes the GPS takes awhile to settle down - initially its readings can be off by about 30 feet. And also, the reported coordinates might be off a tad. So, even if you think you're standing at ground zero, you might not be.

That being said, the coordinates for the cache Rock Grain - Akron were absolutely spot on. This cache is located at the old abandonded Akron (Kansas!) grain elevator right next the railroad tracks. The small elevator was still standing, but the rest of the location is ruins. Detritous everywhere.

So, I got to ground zero and waited a bit for my GPS to settle down. I thought it had to be off, because, I was standing next to nothing - nothing around that would be hiding a geocache. And twenty feet away was tons of stuff and the elevator itself - a great spot to hide a cache. But my GPS stubbornly stayed with its reading.

Here's what I was standing on:

Certainly no obvious geocache here!

Then just for grins, I nudged the board up and voila!!!!

I laughed out loud when I saw the string going down the pipe!

Here's the cache!:

And here's the grain elevator:
