Peter and I saw the flick Sideways last night. Obstensibly, Sideways is a road/buddy picture set in California's wine country. However, at its core, it is really a mash note to wine.
I think, hands down, it has to be the best wine movie ever made.
Although, as I type, I have to ask, are there other wine movies?
There's a scene midway through the movie where Paul Giamatti (Bart's son! Can you believe it?) and Virginia Madsen are talking about what attracts them to wine. Giamatti's character has a masterful monologue about Pinot Noir - the grape's thin skin, the difficulty in nurturing the grape. And Madsen's monologue about the seductiveness and intellectual challenge of wine is amazing.
Of course my favorite bit of dialog was the following:
Thomas Haden Church: If the girls like Merlot, you will drink Merlot!
Paul Giamatti: I will NOT drink fucking Merlot!!!!!!
I believe I've used that very phrase myself on several occasions.
