This Saturday, the Ski Boy and I did the tourist guide thing for Steve and his wife, Norma. Steve is a longtime friend and college/law school classmate of Peter's. They go waaaaaay back.
We did Anchorage stuff during the day and then headed off to Girdwood for the Forest Fair, followed by dinner at the spectacular 7 Glaciers restaurant, high atop Mt. Alyeska.
Girdwood is a state of mind sort of place. Think hobbits crossed with '60's flower children. The Forest Fair is ultimate expression of the Girdwoodian psyche. As such, it is a total blast! It's been several years since I've attended and it is still the same. Great little art booths tucked away amongst the huge towering Sitka Spruce, the incredible food, the Beer Garden, the music, the tie dyed dresses, the flowers in the hair, the odor of pot wafting through the trees...Wait, dope is no longer legal here in Alaska, so no obvious pot fumes trailing about. But, I'm sure the evil weed was in abundance.
After we wandered about the fair, we caught the incredibly unreliable shuttle to the world class Alyeska Prince Hotel and then rode the tram up to the 7 Glaciers for dinner. It doesn't get more perfect than that.
By the time the day was done, we were completely gorged on great food and fabulous views.
A very typical Forest Fair sign.

Aboard the tram - Steve and Norma - and someone hiding behind the Tin Man (could that someone be the Ski Boy?). The Tin Man was a Forest Fair purchase.

Another great sign!

Here I am, at the top of Mt. Alyeska overlooking Turnagain Arm. I think Alyeska has one of the alltime great views of any ski resort in the world. It's rare that a world class ski resort starts literally at sea level.
