I am such a geek. I love this "history of technology" stuff. There are some great technological lessons learned in this story. But there are also some conclusions you can draw about politics and how it impacts the technology.
Since we're talking about history and lessons learned, yesterday Slashdot mentioned a really cool paper (PDF) hosted at IBM. The paper evaluates current industry security practice in light of the conclusions reached thirty years ago when the Air Force sponsored an ethical hack of the Multics operating system. Let's just say there hasn't been much progress (one could argue that no modern operating system is as secure as Multics was 30 years ago). 10:05:42 AM
