Record Industry Auditing MusicDish: "In a shocking statement made by Back Street Boy, Kevin Richardson, he testified that they have never received a royalty check." [Scripting News]
In case you thought I was making up that bit about labels screwing over artists, read this (amazing) story. I knew it was bad, but I didn't realize how corrupt the "auditing" process is. Standard industry contracts put terrible restrictions on how audits are performed, and by who.
That's using your oligopoly power. In a fair market, they wouldn't be able to get away with that sort of thing. Artists wouldn't sign those contracts. But as it is they have no choice. 11:11:55 PM
