Ah, if this sort of dirty-dealing weren't the norm in Washington, I'd be outraged.  Orlowski, in describing the inevitability of the perversion of new forms of expression, puts it beautifully: "Every new technology medium seems to enjoy a delicious moment, between being born as a vehicle for human creativity controlled by no one, into a Pigopolistic advertising channel, controlled by very few."

There are some concerns that this break may be overstated, but the timeframe is impressive nonetheless.  When Microsoft made some manufacturing changes to the XBox (normal changes to the PCB like putting the USB header on the mobo), they took the opportunity to change the XBox's security.  The changes they made broke existing mod chips -- which was the idea.  Mod chips meant for the original XBox won't work for the new units.

These new security measures were defeated in just under a week.  All that work Microsoft did revising the security only bought them a week.  Still think hardware-based security is the solution for DRM?
