Matt Welch has lots of good advice for newspapers over at Jay Rosen's blog.

Matt: "To hell with the ombudsman; put the editor out there, on the op-ed page, and in public, explaining with passion and humanity the decisions he or she makes."

That's exactly what the editor of our hometown paper is doing with his weblog. And he's linking to and playing off other local blogs, too.

Matt's in LA, Jay's in NY -- nice little burgs, but the action is in GSO.

Further notes on air travel etiquette:

Chewing gum in public is vulgar; if you must do it, do it with your mouth closed.

Speaking loudly into your cell phone in a crowded waiting area is tacky; cursing loudly into your cell phone amidst ladies and children is boorish.

And here's a sacrosanct rule of deplaning that I've seen violated every time I've flown in recent months: you let the people in the rows in front of you get out first.

Thanks, and have a great trip!

Provisional votes put Parks on county board over Wade, giving Dems a 7-4 advantage. Hmm. Hoggard may be onto something.

Well, that's a relief: Ashcroft says in resignation letter that "The objective of securing the safety of Americans from crime and terror has been achieved."

And of course he kept abreast of other serious issues, too.
