Chicago Residential Architecture
Chicago's Logan Square House & Garden Walk.

Chicago's Logan Square House & Garden Walk

Guided tours through the interiors of select residences will emphasize architectural ornamentation, furnishings, and the life- styles of Chicago citizens in the early 1900's.

Chicago's Logan Square Preservation announces its 21st annual Logan Square Boulevards Historic District House and Garden Walk on Saturday, September 6, 2003 from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. This year the early settlement of Logan Square is being featured, emphasizing the original Kimbell farm. In 1836, 24 year old Martin Nelson Kimbell arrived from New York and rode west along the old Indian trail (Milwaukee Avenue) to what is now Kimball Avenue (street name later changed from Kimbell to Kimball). Here he purchased 160 acres at $2.50/acre from the federal government in an area now bounded by Kimball on the east, Hamlin on the west, Diversey on the north and Fullerton on the south. One of the original Kimbell homes will be featured.

Several of the original residential streets developed by the family will be the focus of the tour.  These include Kimball (originally Kimbell) Avenue, Bernard Street (originally Smalley Court, named after the wife Sarah Smalley-Kimbell), St. Louis Avenue (originally Ballou Street), Drake and Central Park Avenues.

The Walk will also include a self-guided tour of many beautiful area gardens. Front, side and back gardens, including pocket, secret and public gardens, will be open for strolling and viewing. Some will be part of the homes on tour, and many more can be enjoyed along the route.

In Logan Square, many wealthy Chicago merchants and entrepreneurs built stately mansions and upper-middle class two and three flat homes notable for their diversity of architecture, fine interior detailing and appointments. Styles of architecture include Art Nouveau, Paririe, Renaissance Revival, Victorian, Gothic and Eclectic.

Tickets are $12.00 ($10.00 for Seniors 60+) the day of the walk.  Ticket price includes gardens as well as homes.  For horticultural enthusiasts who wish to visit the gardens only, price is $4.00.  Allow 4 hours to complete the tour at a leisurely pace.  The starting point is Grace Church, 3325 W. Wrightwood Avenue (corner of Kimball and Wrightwood Avenues).

The Stones: Shades of Warhol But I Like It
Via Marc Canter:

Stones get seriously on-line.

Stones: Get yer ya-ya's out online. The Rolling Stones, one of the last marquee holdouts against online music distribution, have finally agreed to sell their music online, according to record label EMI Music. [CNET News.com - Media]

I tried to join the Stones on-line site - but they won't let me join till after the current tour.  In the mean time - only ticket holders can join.  The archives will hold 40 full length concert videos - dating back to '65, full set lists of all tours, unreleased tracks, photos - you name it, this archive is gonna have it.

In other words - the Stones move on-line has been a long time coming, apparently held up by greedy lawyers and labels.  The band has wanted to be here - for a long time.  Getting their material on-line will single handedly tip the scale for digital downloading services.  And it's not iTunes that's got the exclusive - but Real and their Rhapsody service.  The other services will have the Stones - after Sept. 2nd.

It's only R&R - but I like it.
