Dean Grassroots Raise $1,000,000 from Small Donors - Bryant Park Jams
You Are Unbelievable!.

Tonight, as of 9:58 pm ET, 17,115 people have raised an extraordinary $1,003,620.00.

The extraordinary Dean grassroots showed yet again you are powerful and committed and capable of once-unimaginable feats.

You made the million dollar challenge, you got your friends to give, you brought the rallies their power, you are recreating American politics every minute. And you did, magically -- we're all blown away -- with two hours to go before midnight. This week, you proved that the Dean grassroots can win this election and take back the White House.

Thank you!

Bryant Park is electric, surging, nine thousand strong and growing, and I have never experienced anything like it.

The rally is broadcast on CSPAN live -- use this thread to talk about it.

Dean Team Works on the Great Lakes Region / Midwest
Give "flyover country" its due props.

Also late, but I couldn't well post on an airplane. So here goes...

We're now flying over what misguided coastal types refer to as "flyover country". Yet it is here that the battle for the presidency will be fought and won. States like Illinois, Michigan, Missouri, and Ohio will be key to Democratic chances in 2004, and it's good to see they're getting the attention they deserve from Dean.

Chicago was an interesting location -- Illinois isn't an early primary state, so why use time perhaps better spent in Iowa or other "important" Democratic states? Simple -- Illinois is bound by two key early states -- Iowa and Wisconsin, and Dean's Illinois volunteers will provide key ground support in those contests. And in the general, Illinois will provide important electoral votes toward victory. And Chicago, by virtue of its size, is the defacto capital of the "middle" part of the country. One can dismiss it as "flyover country", but the candidate that ignores it is bound to fail.

One of the hallmarks of the Dean candidacy is its self confidence -- able and willing to look past those early primary states while focusing increasingly on the Big Prize -- November 2004. Dean doesn't have the primary sown up, not by a long shot. And there are still likely a great deal of surprises left in the race. But it's encouraging that Dean has been able to nationalize the race long before any of the other candidates.

Sleepless Summer Heads to the Big Apple
Next Stop: New York!.
Sleepless Summer Tour

The Grassroots Express has lifted off and is on its way to the final stop on the Sleepless Summer Tour-- in the city that never sleeps!

Nicco and I are here with other members of the Dean Internet team (Bobby, Jesse, Ken, Jerome) and dozens of volunteers and staffers from Dean NYHQ. We're here in Bryant Park, one of the first public parks to provide free wireless connection to the Internet, which is very cool. A place where people were first able to connect online publicly is the place where thousands tonight will end the tour and kick off the next 35 days of the quarter-- 35 days in which we have the opportunity to change the way politics is done in this country.

The stage is set up, there are Dean posters all over the place, it's a gorgeous August day in New York.

And the bat! Holy smokes! $879,778.00 contributed by 14,875 Americans, as of 3 pm! Today is the day when you are going to raise a million against Bush, and demonstrate to the nation that you have the power to take our country back. Can we pass a million before the Governor takes the stage tonight at 10 pm?

Outside Circle
Outside Circle - an artist collective.

Outside Circle - the art collective that my brother Ben, his girlfriend Julia and I started has really taken off recently.  The community is centered around a geographically dispersed group of artists of all types.  It is set up to encourage artists and allow them to help promote each other.

Currently everything happens at the Outside Circle community weblog which uses technology that my team at Edict created.  It is still pretty young but very powerful and is centered around building communities and tracking the progress that goes into keeping them running.

Anyway, we had our first "retreat" last weekend up at a farm in Holt, MI.  We had a great time.

Here are some pics from the short time I was able to make it.

Ed Cone Blogs Monkeytime
Monkeytime: 9 reasons John Edwards will drop out of the presidential race by Christmas.

Maybe, although Stinging Nettle is right that someone will have to emerge as the Anti-Dean Democrat.

But some of Monkey's criticism is right on the mark. "Turning your back on the Net, without any kind of grassroots structure in place? Now there's a can't-win situation no amount of TV time can cure."

Sad but true.

I keep watching and waiting for the Edwards campaign to do something to light a spark. Anything. The Web is an obvious solution to at least some of their problems. Is it possible that these people really do not understand the Internet at all?

Here's a hint, fellas: It's that big stick Howard Dean is beating the crap out of you with.

People Get Ready II - More on Ticketmaster - OL Blog
I'm still predicting 2004 will be bigger than 'Grunge'. ;o)

It's your call, not mine.

was looking for a tour date somewhere in my hemisphere, and see that Ottmar is going to preform at the 20th Century Theater in Cincinatti, in October. I contacted the theater and requested ticket information. I was prepaired to drive, (about 120 miles), to the theater to purchace tickets vs. pay the $7.50 per ticket charge from Ticket master. The theater manager said that all advance tickets are availible thru ticket master only. Well I could have, I was at the computer when they went on sale, but I didn't buy tickets because of the inflated surcharge. Had the tickets been $25 and the surcharge $3, I'd have tickets for the show. Now I have to wait for the day of the show and hope some tickets will be availible at the door, of coarse then they are $3 more. Please considder that Ticketmaster is run by the devil and I don't do business with the devil. If you could find a way to provide ticket sales thru the theater or some other outlet, I sure would appreciate it. Thank You, Bert Huckelberry [apple] 8/26/03; 9:33:34 AM
Ah, how I agree with you, Bert. But I have to make a lot of deals with the devil. From 1989 until today the list of deals with the devil has grown to be very, very long. And it is tiring and upsetting and often I want to just quit because it makes me sick to my stomach. Yes, I often consider retiring because there are many elements of this business that I do not like in the least. To some it is capitalism at its finest, but I feel that Capitalism unchecked is no better than Communism. A balance must be found. If you do not like Ticketmaster's monopoliy and business practises go out and vote, support a candidate that shares your views, or picket. Remember what happened to a little band called Pearl Jam that stood up against Ticketmaster? In other words here are our choices (your and mine):
1. I tour and perform or
2. I try to tell promoters not to use their choice of ticket outlet and end up staying home. [Ottmar Liebert]

E-mail from Governor Howard Dean M.D.
Dear Gary,

The Sleepless Summer Tour has been absolutely awe-inspiring. Everywhere we have gone, we have seen an incredible number of people taking part in our democracy again-- and on Sunday, an amazing 15,000 people rallied for our campaign in Seattle.

Today we're carrying on to Chicago and New York. And as I write this, more than 11,000 people all across the country have contributed nearly $700,000 to our campaign during the tour. Our goal is to raise a million dollars by the end of today-we have only $300,000 to go. Please join thousands of others and help make the Sleepless Summer Tour a success by making a contribution today:

http://www.deanforamerica.com/contribute

Tonight's rally in New York will be broadcast live on C-SPAN2 at 10 pm Eastern, and may be rebroadcast at 11 pm on C-SPAN. Please forward this email on to your friends and invite them to watch the rally-this is an important opportunity to let others know about our campaign. Go to our weblog for the latest information:

http://www.blogforamerica.com

During the next 36 days of this campaign, you have the power to change the way politics is done in this country-to restore our political process to a politics of meaning. Continue to spread the word, and ask others to join us, so that we can reach our goal of 450,000 supporters by September 30th. And please take the time to contribute what you can today, because the power to change our country rests in your hands, not mine.

Thank you for everything you've done.

Howard Dean
