A place where it is illegal to NAT and VPN... A place where you get arrested for posting signs saying "All your base are belong to us!" - an obvious act of terrorism.

Duh.

"Police in Sturgis, Michigan have arrested seven people for posting signs around the city on April fools day which read "All your base are belong to us!" The local police chief, obviously not in on the joke, had this to say: "This is no joking matter. During a time of war and with the present concern for homeland security, terrorist acts will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law." [ via MemeStreams]

"Proving only that he hasn't talked to an actual software developer in a coon's age, Larry Ellison predicts that Linux is going to eventually eat Microsoft for lunch. On the desktop, except for a few dedicated followers of the Church of Apple and Unix-lovin' software developers, Microsoft owns this space and will for a long time. In developer land, having been recently reintroduced to the ins and out of Microsoft development, I'm reminded how differently Unix developers and Microsoft developers approach software development. If Unix development philosophy is small pieces loosely joined, Microsoft's philosophy is big chunks tightly coupled. Microsoft developers aren't going to suddenly jump ship to a completely different platform and way of developing...there's a lot of friction and inertia there (not to mention Microsoft's considerable marketing efforts) that will tend to prevent that." Microsoft keeps making it easier to write code.  I won't complain about that.  Where they may start to hurt is where software gets expensive -- namely servers.  Jason's thoughts though are right on.

  • Hydra: Rendezvous-Enabled Text Editing (neat Mac OS X application that lets you edit a document simultaniously with others nearby)
  • Linux Audio Development (this is slowly picking up speed. the first time i installed slackware in 1995, i would have never dreamed of the stuff that can be done today - but i'll stick to windows for now)

"The Recording Industry Association of America has launched legal action against four college students who build and maintain general-purpose file-sharing technologies on campus. The RIAA's press release is full of nasty name-calling, but fails to explain how any of this harassment of college kids will do anyone any good -- presumably, the kids have no assets to sue for; shutting down campus networks won't pay artists, nor will it make more work available to the public (and it won't make the lameass Pressplay networks any better)."
