Good morning students, it's Registration Day!
Today and tomorrow are the registration days at Insead. It is supposed to be done alphabetically, but it seems that you can go at any time, pick up your starter packet, and choose the line in which you'd like to wait. I was supposed to register tomorrow, but I started this afternoon. It was relatively easy, you were provided with a helpful checklist, and everyone seemed professional, even after a long and stressful day.
I did confirm something that I had thought before, which is that any kind of bureaucracy in France works much, much better when you speak a bit of French. A few times today, after starting in English and noticing that I wasn't receiving the level of service that I expect, I switched to French. Suddenly, people were falling all over themselves to help me, and doing extra work to make me happy. Makes you wonder how your own country treats people who don't speak the native language well.
I have already written about my "furnished" room. Today, I went to Ikea. Let's just take a moment and say it together: "I Love Ikea!" I made a list of things to find, twenty-odd in all, and I got 90% of them. There is now a beautiful bookcase in my room, with my things neatly arranged around it. Votive candles and holders. Books. Spare sheets. It's lovely.
I must admit, though, that it's 2AM, and I had that dreaded Ikea moment: when you are mastered by an Allen wrench, a wooden peg, and a simple diagram. I just can't put that damn wardrobe together. Granted, I don't have the screwdriver that I'm supposed to, but I'm an engineer! Perhaps I'll just go back and get a better one; this one's cheap, and I wouldn't mind throwing it away.
Tomorrow, on to registration, and the all-important opening session. Suits required!!
