Yesterday, I purchase a pair of climbing shoes. Yes, I already have a wonderful pair, but they are in storage several thousand miles away, and I find myself in some of the best bouldering terrain in all Europe. There are literally hundreds of bouldering routes in the Fontainebleau forest, and I have met several climbers in the last few weeks. I figured that I would buy the shoes now so that they would be broken in by the time I got around to using them, probably at least a month away.
My feet are in agony.
I spent about an hour in the sports store, trying on different sizes. All the sizes were on the rack, so it was very DIY; no clerks to assist you. This would have been great, except that none of the shoe sizes corresponded to the rack on which they sat, so I had to go through many pairs to narrow down my choices. I had decided to get another pair of La Sportiva slippers; I have a wonderful pair of Vipers at home and wanted to stay with the same brand. Apparently the Vipers are discontinued, or else they have been renamed Cobras; go figure. First I tried the 40, then 39 1/2, then 39... and they were still slipping a little on my heel. There is nothing I love more than sticking a high heel hook on a ledge, so I was intent on getting a tight pair. Unfortunately there were no 38 1/2, only 38, which I could barely fit my foot into. No matter; I bought them. After reading several review that advocated "aggressive downsizing" I do feel a bit relieved, since right now I can only wear them for 10 minutes at a stretch!!
