One of the great things about Insead is that its location. It's far enough in the middle of nowhere so that you can concentrate, but close enough to Paris so that you can have city benefits closeby. This weekend, Lucky went to Paris with a friend, where they caroused, shopped, dined like royalty, and otherwise acted bratty and spoiled, which is fun as long as you realize it's what you are doing.
Friday's dinner was at Kim Ahn, at 10pm. Somewhere in the 15th, the restarant serves modern Vietnamese food to an eclectic crowd. We saw older couples, younger couples, and some couples whose relationship remained mysterious (is she his mother? or sugar momma?). We ordered two entrées and two plats (appetizers and entrées, respectively, for you anglophones), which were served sequentially so that they could be shared, and they culminated in a monstrous prawn curry, hot and intense, with flavors that were Indian inspired but original in that I couldn't identify them at all. Highly recommended.
Saturday's dinner also started at 10pm at a Spanish restarant a few blocks from Nôtre Dame, named Fogon Saint-Julien. Their specialty is paella, which I love, so do be sure to order it if you go. Their prix-fixe was a particularly good deal, serving several tapas starters, a paella, and dessert for €35. The wine was delicious as well, a 1996 Imperial Reserva Rioja, and it accompanied the food quietly but competently.
This was my first time wandering around the Marais, visiting fabulous clothes shops and eating crêpes and hot chocolate. The French are a fashionable people, and now I know where they buy all of their clothes! I got a pair of pants and a full-length black coat for which I have been searching for years. Only a few more months till spring season...
