Understanding the Tsunami

An epic human tragedy by any measure.

A few things to watch out for in the reporting:

1) Be wary of spin that presents massive government intervention as the primary countermeasure to alleviating the effects of this disaster. Particularly the notion that "only the UN is capable of directing such an historic relief effort." (Memory check: Remember all those starving Iraqi children the UN helped while managing the Oil for Food program?)

2) As the death toll mounts, we may reach a point where accuracy in government statistics is sacrificed in the scramble for prescious relief dollars.

3) Rembember to note and celebrate the efforts of private citizens and organizations responding rapidly to the most urgent needs of those affected.

And, don't forget the power of prayer.
