Wrapping up Tomobako Along with the text on the box mentioned yesterday, the Tomobako might have a small cord to keep the lid in place. These braided cords, or Kumihimo, are an art and craft in themselves. The knots that may be used with them may be quite sophisticated as well. As with most things, there is the baroque. Mizuhiki, a paper cord(s) that has been twisted, woven, and knotted into fantastic shapes, such as dragons and ships. (This historically came from gift wrapping.) There is also a post-modern aesthetic of cord/rope, such as with the work of Mariyo Yagi.
Of course, many cultures have an aesthetic appreciation for knots. |
