Astronomical Surface Decorations on Ceramics, Japan part IX Ceramic figures depicting characters of the zodiac are popular. These are include in the type of object called of saikumono - "sculptured things" or miniature pieces. Shimamura Hikaru is known for re-popularizing this type of work. I found his take on a zodiac horse figure. While not surface decoration, it does lead me to want to go back and look further into zodiac and other figures that are a least symbolically related to astronomical positions. It would be interesting to see if groups of these in a design were positioned to mirror the stars. 3:10:12 PM
