Fake, Inside Joke, or Cutting Edge Conceptual Art-
Glaze names cont'

Just as the glazes we've been looking at, clay bodies also have names, and are formulated for particular reasons.

One such clay body is "Lehman Recipe 5-D." Dick Lehman created this clay body for his wood kiln:

It seems to respond especially well when it is quite hot, and records even the slightest ash accumulations (when it is hot). It has a pearly luster appearance, often over a deep caramel-y color; and heavy ash accumulations seem to flux well on this body producing vivid crystal-bearing runs over the pearly less-ashed areas.

So if we make a pot using a clay body designed for wood firing, but put yeterday's fake ash glaze over it, we have an interesting interplay of the real and the fake.

We don't even have to fire it!
