Words on Clay- The cover of the December 2004 edition of Ceramics Monthly features a vase by Connie Norman. She is known for using "text as texture." The piece on the cover, Tiny Giant, stands some 19.5 inches high. Which for a piece of pottery is pretty big (thus a bit of a paradox.) The words really do cover the piece with meaning. The form and colors speak for themselves and are well designed. However, these attributes do lend themselves to the text meaning. The spout seems to be bursting up from the handle forms. The circular patterned areas could be patches or parts that are being pulled apart by the textual area of the piece. It seems to be growing...small but getting bigger. More of her work can be seen at 2004 Govener's Capital Art Exhibition in Wyoming and use surface text as well. Titles include: Dangerous Zeal, Amethystrain, and You Me and the Wind 7:21:16 AM |
