Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix     Harry Potter

Only 300 pages left to go! I think I must need new glasses again because I used to be able to read a lot more in one sitting than I can now... Still, I'm farther along in the story than most of my (also middle-aged) friends, who only got one copy of the book and so have to take turns with other family members. (Chalk up one more for living by yourself!) At least all of us slowpokes are being respectful of each other and avoiding as much discussion of the book as possible until everybody's caught up.

Well, this is the end of blogging and reading of blogs for today. I will now be focusing on ice cream, baseball (Padres at Mariners, in progress) and magic for the rest of the evening.

Don't call me!       Do Not Call

I haven't had to mess with telemarketers for years! Brand new unlisted number works wonders, to start with. (Being online so much they can't get through doesn't hurt either.)

Also, here the local laws regarding telemarketing are already very strict and strongly enforced. There have been a few illegal calls to my number by autodialers (RealAudio) but not more than once or twice a year and it's a real joy to report them. (heh heh heh) And then there are a few callers who got my phone number legally—not with my permission however!—who only have to be told once to never call back.

But it's obvious that the new national no-call list is being welcomed with open arms by others. Not that I'm going to give them my number—don't need to. (As long as the tougher local law isn't superseded anyway...)

§ - Customer service? - Mum blames Telstra for son's death

§ - Web privacy policies confuse Net surfers - "More than half of the 1,200 adults surveyed for the report wrongly believed that the mere presence of a privacy policy meant that that the Web site would not sell or trade personal information about them."

§ - Slurred Speech - "If people stopped acting like victims there would be better race relations."

§ - Harry Crushes the Hulk - "Here's what's wrong with kids in the digital age. They live in front of their TV and PC screens. They steal music online. Their attention span is zilch. They multitask on everything and concentrate on nothing except video games. They will buy any trashy product that the media goliaths can sell them, then drop it as soon as the next big hype comes along. That's merely the short list of hard-wired assumptions that were short-circuited by last weekend's publication of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix."

I turned off the Earthlink anti-spam setting because it had filtered out an important email from a shop in Brooklyn that is repairing my watch...and now I get over 50 emails a day and 90% are spam. And they jam up my precious cellphone connection...

Almost a month ago I got an e-mail from someone at "Microsoft Recruiting" in regards to a new search engine at MSN. It looked like boilerplate that they'd sent out to about a billion people, so I took little happiness in the fact that someone associated with Microsoft noticed my existence. Besides, they spelled my name wrong.
