Duchscherer

I've been watching Justin Duchscherer pitch for the A's against the Mariners this afternoon but this isn't really going to be a post about baseball.

I was rather surprised when this kid appeared on the baseball scene because in my entire life I'd only known one person named Duchscherer—my fourth grade teacher. Guess what our very first spelling word of the year was—yep, we had to get her name right from day one, no excuses. (It's easy to say—"duke-sure"—but a spelling challenge because it's so long with that extra "er" at the end.) She was a very tough but excellent teacher who was passionate about square dancing so guess what we did for p.e. By the end of the year, her classes would be good enough as dancers that we ended up performing at assemblies and PTA meetings, even another school one time.

I keep wondering if Justin is related to my old teacher—she'd be about the age to be his grandmother... But I can't even remember her first name to try searching.

Feline "Up"date

Well, looks like Mr. Upstairs Cat is done having fun out in our backyard wilderness and wants to go home. Unfortunately, while gravity got him down from his deck, he hasn't figured out how to float back up there. (I envision Pooh using balloons to go after hunny.) The trees have been pruned back enough to keep squirrels (and cats) from getting up there. And of course I don't have a key to the upstairs apartment nor do I have a ladder so I can't help him out. Guess he's just going to have to wait until his people get home. Poor baby.

Saturday Morning

Woke up to more viruses in my email than real mail. This has gotten so old so fast... If Yahoo would let me block by sender name (not just From address) or subject or size I'd be fine. But no... So my good mail (and no doubt even more viruses) keeps bouncing—and I haven't had time to actually read what little real mail has actually managed to get through.

On a more entertaining note, one of the upstairs indoors-only cats, not really a kitten anymore but still not quite fullgrown, has gotten out again—guess he discovered that the drop from the 2nd floor deck isn't that bad and he's "falling" on purpose these days! He's been entertaining me with a real show chasing after every bird and squirrel in the yard. Don't think he has any intention of actually catching any of them, especially since he won't bother to go up a tree after a squirrel even though he easily could. (Good thing too, since there's a new baby squirrel out in "public" for the first time and I think Mr. Cat could catch that youngster.) This all reminds me of when my own son was a toddler and loved nothing more than taking a run at a flock of pigeons just for the sheer joy of watching them all take off into the air at once.
