§ - Ridge Urged to Restrict Use of California Driver's Licenses - "Since now it is so easy for anyone, including illegal aliens and terrorists, to get a California driver's permit, it is clear that such a document no longer provides any assurance that the holder deserves to be allowed a seat on an airplane."
§ - Multitasking and Your Mind - "Studies also show that surgeons are more alert and accurate if they listen to their favorite music as they work. ...this may well be because music and skilled manual activities draw upon different parts of the brain." - It's a pretty safe bet that I won't ever get any housecleaning done unless I can listen to the television while I work. I know for sure I'm a safer driver if I've got music (country!) on when I drive. Have to be careful about listening to baseball games, though, because I'll start visualizing the game and not see the traffic I'm actually staring at!
§ - Three Doctors Arrested Over Fatal Surgical Mishap - "One of the nurses present at the operation said: 'I just wanted them to stop.'" - So why didn't she get on the phone and call for help or something? Oh yeah, I know. There's this whole mystique doctors have anyway—why, I don't understand, and yes, I have worked for doctors and am acquainted with many nurses—but I guess in Japan, a female nurse speaking up and/or doing something about the situation would be especially problematic. (I realized after I wrote that comment that the article doesn't actually specify the gender of the quoted nurse, but what d'ya wanna bet...? Of course, in Japan, I'm not sure any nurse would ever talk back to a doctor. Even here in the U.S., nurses may talk about the doctors behind their backs but will seldom disagree with them face-to-face, even when they should.)
