Central Utah Project
In a statement before the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Energy and Water Development yesterday, Bennett W. Raley, the Assistant Secretary for Water and Science of the Department of the Interior said this about the Central Utah Project Completion Act: [this act] provided for completion of the Central Utah Project by the Central Utah Water Conservancy District, authorized funding for fish, wildlife, and recreation mitigation and conservation; established the Utah Reclamation Mitigation and Conservation Commission, and provided for the Ute Indian Rights Settlement.  The Program office is in Provo.

Utah's Congressional Delegation: Asbestos
Senator Hatch is urging the contentious parties to get together for prompt passage of an Asbestos bill. Health litigation involving asbestos is blamed for the bankruptcy of over 60 US Companies. The bill would establish a trust fund to deal with continuing claims. Hatch wants to establish payment from this fund based solely on medical criteria, an approach opposed by labor unions.  While there is general bipartisan support for a trust fund, there is controversy over issues such as a cap on payouts.
