Scotsman: "He is an enigma. An Italian academic at a university that refuses to confirm his status. A suspected gun runner. A victim of the Russian state or an secret extension of its iron fist? Questions swirled around the smartly dressed figure of Mario Scaramella last night as it was revealed he was carrying traces of polonium 210 in a significant quantity.
But the difference in dosages between the two men may be a sign the academic was involved in a poisoning attempt in some other unexplained way."

NPR: "The death of former KGB agent Alexander Litvinenko - attributed to poisoning with radioactive Polonium-210 - continues to perplex authorities in London. Did he have blood on his own hands?"

The media obviously don't want to look the truth in the face. And it's so obvious.
The pattern of contamination points at handling of radioactive material by Litvinenko himself. The choice of airline (BA not Aeroflot) points at illegal traffic (if the FSB were involved their first choice of transport would be Aeroflot - the Russian government would be in control on a Aeroflot flight).
The history of all those involved, points at illegal nuclear trafficking.
So, it's fairly simple, the illegal traffickers were not aware of the dangers of contamination and contaminated themselves.
Contrary to what we are made to believe, Polonium-210 is not easily contained. It is said that the radiation of Polonium can be stopped by a sheet of paper. But other sources suggest it can behave in a very strange way. Workers involved in the manufacture of Polonium say that when packed in several layers, including lead, traces of the substance were found out of the container at the point of destination.

The image we now get of Litvinenko is that of a crook. He is said to have blackmailed Russian businessmen.
Of course, it is still possible Litvinenko was framed by one of those figures, but it looks like Litvinenko himself wouldn't object to a bout of illegal nuclear trafficking. His world was one of deceit and killing. He has only himself to blame.
