EUObserver: "EU member states have for the second time snubbed the European Commission by backing an Austrian ban on two genetically modified maize products, which the commission says violates international trade rules."

If international trade rules are violating human health and free trade, then they should be abolished. Those rules only favour the big monopolies, who are now trying to force genetically modified products on us. They are not only destroying natural crops and endangering our future food production and our environment, but are damaging international free trade.

WashingtonPost: "A surge in violent crime that began last year accelerated in the first half of 2006, the FBI reported yesterday, providing the clearest signal yet that the historic drop in the U.S. crime rate has ended and is being reversed."

Azstarnet: "A Midtown strip mall that should have housed the best of the best served as Corruption Central in Tucson. Two military recruiting stations sit side-by-side there, one run by the Army, the other by the Marines. Between them, a total of seven recruiters were on the take, secretly accepting bribes to transport cocaine, even as most spent their days visiting local high schools.
They had help from several more recruiters at an Army National Guard office, where one recruiter was said to be selling cocaine from the trunk of his recruiting vehicle.

Together, these dozen or so recruiters formed the nucleus of one of the FBI's biggest public corruption cases, the sting known as Operation Lively Green, which unfolded in Southern Arizona from 2002-2004 and was made public last year.
Many of the drug-running recruiters remained on the job, with continued access to local schools, for months - and often, years - after FBI agents secretly filmed them counting cash next to stacks of cocaine bricks, the Arizona Daily Star found in a months-long probe of court records and military employment data.
Some were still recruiting three years after they first were caught on camera running drugs in uniform. Most have pleaded guilty and are to be sentenced in March. Some honorably retired from the military."

LATimes: "U.S. Special Forces teams sent overseas on secret spying missions have clashed with the CIA and carried out operations in countries that are staunch U.S. allies, prompting a new effort by the agency and the Pentagon to tighten the rules for military units engaged in espionage, according to senior U.S. intelligence and military officials."

NYTimes: "A Pentagon assessment of security conditions in Iraq concluded Monday that attacks against American and Iraqi targets had surged this summer and autumn to their highest level, and called violence by Shiite militants the most significant threat in Baghdad."

AlterNet: "That the US tortures, routinely and systematically, while prosecuting its 'war on terror' can no longer be seriously disputed. The Detainee Abuse and Accountability Project (DAA), a coalition of academics and human rights groups, has documented the abuse or killing of 460 inmates of US military prisons in Afghanistan, Iraq and at Guantanamo Bay. This, it says, is necessarily a conservative figure: many cases will remain unrecorded. The prisoners were beaten, raped, forced to abuse themselves, forced to maintain 'stress positions', and subjected to prolonged sleep deprivation and mock executions."

The aim of torture is not to gain information. It never is, and never will result in useful information. The torturers want to impose their will and enjoy their power. Criminal authorities always lie and they know they are lying. So they know the truth won't help them. The only way to get their victims to 'confess' is to torture them. Torture always is a sign of fundamental criminality.
