Taking Chance: Bringing A Marine Home
Regardless of where you come out on the issue of war, you really should take the time to read the following article. Being the fairly cynical guy I am, it's rare that something I read will get to me nearly as much as the story of LtCol Strobl and his mission of escorting Chance Phelps, a soldier who recently died in Iraq, to his home in Wyoming.
It's a story I wish I could use in the classroom. But since I teach on an Army base where most of my students have parents in Iraq right now, for some this story would be just too much. Too close to home.
It starts:
Chance Phelps was wearing his Saint Christopher medal when he was killed on Good Friday. Eight days later, I handed the medallion to his mother. I didn't know Chance before he died. Today, I miss him.
Find some quiet time to yourself and read the rest of this incredibly touching story.
