Brussels, Belgium
My mom and I spent Saturday in Brussels. After getting on a bus at 5 a.m. followed by a five and a half hour trip through western Germany, Luxembourg, and southen Belgium, we arrived in downtown Brussels for a short walking tour led by our USO tour guide.
First off, the city is much more impressive than I imagined. Brussels had not been on my list of must-see cities when I moved to Europe, but after spending an afternoon there, I'd definitely recommend a stop there, even if just for a day. The Grand Place, where we spent much of our time in and around, is worth the trip on its own. Definitely in the running for the most beautiful city square in all of Europe.
Besides the Grand Place, we also saw the Manneken Pis, ate a legit Belgium waffle (mine was covered in chocolate and bananas), visited a lace shop, and took a bus tour of the city. The only downside on the bus tour was that the audio we were listening to in English would sometimes tell us to look at something to our right when it was on our left or not there at all.
I'd go into more detail, but today we're off to take a boat cruise down the Rhine and tomorrow we head to Switzerland. More about all that later.
In the meantime, look at the photos and read the comments from the Brussels trip through this link:
