i'm so spacey today, I've worked 15 hour days for the last three days and am exhausted and have to leave in about 1/2 hour to volunteer tonight, I committed weeks ago, wish I could cancel but I can't.
Yahoo Domains suck. I canceled a domain because it was set to auto renew on 1-18-08, one month before the domain expired not realizing that Yahoo auto renews one month in advance - figured that out after the fact and you can't tell it not to auto-renew, the only option to keep from auto-renewing on a specific date is to cancel it. I setup domain backorder with my domain register, figuring that the domain was canceled so I should be able to get it within a few days but that's not how it works. Yahoo keeps the domain until it expires whether its canceled or not, they don't release it. So then I had to do a transfer request to my domain host but in order to get the authorization code from yahoo, I had to re-activate the domain - basically I had buy the domain again for another year through yahoo. Then login, get the authorization code and finish the transfer request - which now will take up to 5 days to complete.
My bad, but I thought this would be a quick and easy cancel the domain, grab the domain through another registrar - maybe a two day turn around, didn't realize this was going to be a complicated mess. Yes, I should know better, I've had to deal with yahoo before but I guess I was hoping it would be fairly seamless to get this done and my client's original site would only tbe down for a few days, that I could grab the domain name and forward it to the new domain/host and I could get paid for this project. What I really don't like, is that this account is all on my client's wife's account and I'm having to login to her email to check to see if Yahoo sent any info pertaining to the account and I don't really like that my billing information is on her account.
Yahoo needs to make it an option to cancel the auto-renew, so you have options of what you want to do with your domain through the expiration date. Give people a chance, send them an email reminder that its expiring and they need to renew their domain and hosting.
Buyer beware: I know yahoo is out there and with your ATT account it seems like a great idea to buy domains and hosting through your ATT/Yahoo account but please don't, there are so many other options that allow you take control of when your account renews and sends you reminders to renew, that don't just expect that you won't.
