I volunteered the last couple of nights at The Crucible and last night went ok, standing on my feet for 5 1/2 hours in the a cold cold warehouse was hard but I volunteered to do it. Tonight, I volunteered and kind of felt like I was treated like a second class citizen after my shift was over, I asked if I could get wrist band to get a beer and they were like no, you didn't pay for the event. WTF? I was like what? Then they said just find someone you know working the bar and get a beer but take off your volunteer shirt or close your jacket so people know you're not working? huh? I was off, they didn't need me anymore, I could watch the show but couldn't get a drink or eat the VIP food. I almost said, so I'll pay for 1/2 the show, how much? Its not like I couldn't afford the VIP gala, I could have but thought I'd volunteer instead and help out, if I'd known I was going to get treated like i was a second class citizen, I would have just bought a ticket. What really annoys me, is that last night, the whole damn staff was getting cold beers out of the coke machine, pouring the beer into coffee cups and drinking while they were working but a volunteer can't have a beer. I guess my point is, don't treat your volunteers like crap if you want them to volunteer again. I think the next event, I'll just buy a ticket and go as a guest.
Another annoying little issue with The Crucible, I volunteered to help them with website redesign/development in trade for classes and tonight I found out they are going to bid out the job to a web design firm? Huh, I've been putting in hours setting up a test site for them and they might not even use it. I'm a web design firm, how come they didn't tell me about the new plan, I want the job. Paid projects actually get done faster than free work. Yea, I'm going to bid on the project or at least tell them I want to bid on the project but it would have been nice to know that all the work I've been doing for this test site is not needed, I could be using what little free time I have for other projects.
Which goes back to my point, don't treat your volunteers like crap if you want them to volunteer again.
