Or you could spend $70,000 on digidesign's new Icon. I love Digi but...I don't know about this one. - Eric N • 4/17/04; 10:52:57 PM
Pro studios will consider that super-cheap. Check out this tiny SSL board which someone originally paid over 400 large for. Now imagine what this one is worth. A cool million most likely. So 70 large for the Icon is rather cheap in those terms. Hell, the Midas board we carry on tour costs that much....so, if you spill beer in our mixing console I'll personally tackle you! No, make that I'll send my two biggest roadies to tackle you.

On the other hand, I think that most of the appeal of these new boards like the icon is convenience and how impressive they look. Remember that a lot of the pro clients are probably old rockers who are used to seeing big analog Neve consoles. They are so big you can get lost around them. I once fell asleep under a Neve during a rather long session and it took a while for someone to find me....

You can have the same sound quality using virtual faders on your laptop or whatever. But that wouldn't look as impressive to your big clients, would it.

Me, I would suggest downloading this list of keyboard short -cuts from DigiDesign. It'll speed up your ProTools sessions more than getting the fancy board. I am looking to maybe sell my ProControl and FaderPack later this year and going virtual. For me smaller is better. And yes, small strawberries taste better, and have you tried those tiny South-American or Japanese potatoes? Yummy!
