Stash matters

Faced with a 50th birthday party this weekend for a flamboyant friend, what do I do? Go shopping in my stash! The above is the start of a funky scarf--all garter stitch--knit on size 50 needles. (Yes, they're like knitting with baseball bats.) The yarn: Berroco Furz color 3830, Interlacements Utah color 102 and Crystal Palace Deco Ribbon in one of their wonderful lime greens.
Cast on 10 stitches and away you go. Hint: Work all ends as you go for minimal weaving, (which doesn't work well on this scale anyway).
This brings me back to the case for stash. Even you wool purists out there ought to squirrel away a bit of novelty yarn and cotton for those emergency birthday and baby gifts. Lime green is always good. Blacks, hot pinks, reds too. Have fun, it's a great way to begin knitting outside the pattern box.
