Pompons!
Shake 'em: Ladies, it's time to get out your pompons or pasties and give 'em a shake.
Last night as I lay in bed following my first successful pomming, I had this revelation: For years I've been making tassels and calling them pompons. Sad isn't it when you can't properly identify your embellishments? This was my method.
Knowing that I needed a more spherical tickler for a secret project, I consulted Nicky Epstein's comprehensive Knitted Embellishments and found my pattern. (Try this more straight-forward version.) Nicky managed to make this simple task quite onerous, but she was there when I needed her. And her book is a knitting library must-have. Should you ever need to knit a sunflower, Nick is your gal.
