Why I Knit: A response

La Brainy got me thinkin': Yesterday, Alison wrote a terrific post about knitting and how it fits into her sense of self. She loves the intricacies of it combined with the sensual gratification of running delicious yarns through her fingers.

Others, like she said, love the meditative aspects, the hypnotic slip and click of needles and yarn. Then there are the engineers among us, the master builders, the ones who love the number crunching and architecture involved. Certainly we knit for a cassoulet of reasons. There's room for all.

For me, it's pretty simple. I love clothes. I can't draw. And I bite my cuticles.

Knitting makes it possible to own one-of-a-kind pieces, sweaters that only exist in our imaginations. I've always adored V-back tops, but try finding one. And boatnecks. Can a girl ever have enough boatnecks?  Knitting empowers us to knit that which we cannot buy.

And for the artistically challenged among us, it provides an outlet for visual creative expression. I'm one of those people friends mock when I play Pictionary. (My husband gets me, though. I'll draw an unrecognizable blob, and he'll yell, "Monkey!" He nails it everytime.) Knitting makes it possible to employ color, design and texture in the service of creating something lovely. Whether we can paint portraits or not.

Finally, there's the fidgeting thing. Sit me in one place and I'll be biting my nails, picking my cuticles, chewing my hair or wiggling my foot. Pretty disgusting, actually. More appealing (and productive) to sit decorously and knit, don't you think? And what wonderful rationale for watching endless amounts of telly?

This is why I knit. Why do you?

Daily kudos: To whomever created this...

Have a great weekend!
