Lust Objects
A knitting bag named desire: As an addendum to my last post: My knitting is also about lust. About wanting to appear more glamorous. About possessing material goods. About bringing to life my fantasy self on the material plane.
I adore wearing costumes. Donning rhinestone earrings with blue jeans. Lace hose with serious black trousers. Ballet flats with cut offs. Odd, how taking sartorial chances seems easier as I grow older.
Putting on a costume makes it possible to face difficult situations; a structured suit paired with wild earrings makes it easier for me to face college presidents with the one question they can't resist: Sir, what is your vision? A pair of slim silk pants mixed with a Chinese brocade vest works makes it possible to address a full banquet hall feeling clever and sexy without teetering precariously on high heels. A (fake) concho belt in Manhattan (New Yorkers don't know the difference) lets Gotham know you don't give a rip about the latest must-have bag, shoe or coat but are secure enough to sashay down Fifth Avenue in your Levis feeling mighty fine.
Knitting allows us to play with our personas by making it possible to create the garments that live inside our heads. (If you can sew too, well, you've got your imagination by the tail.) Wonderful to have the power to say, "This is what I want" and have the wherewithall to create it.
