Software Vendors Liability in New Zealand

Either Chris Barton, the author of this article:"Microsoft security flaws trampling on consumer rights" is reading my weblog(somehow I doubt it) or the idea has come from somewhere else. Regardless he seems to be talking about liablity issues that Microsoft has or might have with security flaws in software (at least in New Zealand).

He goes further -- suggesting even criminal laws may apply.

Maybe the idea has some traction?

Windows patches may become automatic

I think this is inevitable. The article just mentions making the automatic updates enabled as a default. The article makes good points on what Microsoft must be prepared to do. I think centering out Microsoft though is not entirely fair. I think all software vendors must do the same.

I think this has to go farther. I think the updates must have some mandatory aspect to them. Perhaps those that do not allow automatic updates or do not apply updates immediately should be limited in their ability to force liability on software providers as I have suggested they be allowed to do. This forces some of the responsibility back to the system users (as is appropriate) and strikes what is probably a reasonable balance.

Sobig Virus

Is anyone out there winning the battle against the Sobig Virus at the mail server level? It seems as fast as I can ban a group of IP addresses more pop up spewing the virus in my direction.

Anybody have any strategies that seem to be working?
