Dave Winer sees evil meaning in temp files. Actually, Dave, if you look at how they work, your temp folder will take something like 5% of your hard drive and then delete as that folder fills up.
Why is it there? To make it faster to surf around (Internet Explorer caches graphics and pages so that you don't need to redownload a lot of stuff everytime you visit a new page on a site).
Longhorn won't change this behavior. Also, he has it backwards. We don't do this to sell more drives, we just notice that most people now are buying 100GB drives and not putting all that much on them. I have 5300 pictures (5 megapixels) for instance. That's only 12GB.
Translation: Longhorn will probably use even more hard drive space than Windows XP did.[The Scobleizer Weblog]

A little name dropping if I may. Louis and I grew up in the same town - Jamestown, ND. He was long gone by the time I arrived there being 30 years older than I. I do know that I sat in the same desk he did in High School because I sat in every desk in that school and they had not been changed since it was built in the 20's. He was known to hang out at the library which was also the hangout of my nerdy group. I never heard his name when I was growing up but at that time he was a relative unknown, having only written some stories under another name for pulp fiction magazines. Now he has more books in print than any single author in history. If you are a fan of his be sure to visit Jamestown and the museum there sometime. Oh yes - be sure to see White Cloud who munches grass on the hillside behind the museum and The Worlds Largest Buffalo. In case your wondering --- yes, there was a big debate about whether to include a certain part of the male buffalo's anatomy in the statue, and yes, it was included (as you can see in these pictures) and yes, they were painted red at regular intervals, and no, I do not have any idea who would do such a deed!
