Picture of the Day
Raisin drying. This area of the San Joaquin Valley is where they all come from. The Sun Maid plant is just a few miles from here. Notice the soil looks very sandy. A man from France noticed that many years ago and thought grapes could be grown here because the soil look so much like what he saw in France. Thats a story I will do another day.
The grapes are laid on these paper sheets on the dirt beside the grape vine they were picked from.
The biggest fear of raisin growers is rain. If it comes to soon and gets on the drying grapes the crop is a total loss due to mold. If there is rain in the forecast you will see the field workers rolling up these paper sheets as fast as they can. The paper has one side that is plastic impregnated. If it gets rolled up in time the grapes are protected. They can be unrolled after the rain has passed. Anything that is unrolled when the first drops begin to fall is left to rot.
You will be happy to know that the crop was rain free this year and prices should be stable.
