DUmmies Raving Again. The Bush-hatred is overflowing at Democratic Underground, where they've been driven into a frothing nightmare frenzy over the President's visit to Iraq, even suggesting that it was an impersonator who ... [little green footballs]

Good politics and a good thing to do [Daniel Drezner]

Does this mean that this wasn’t a good political move for the President? Of course not. However, despite some problematic policies as of late, it is possible for a presidential action to simultaneously be the right thing to do and the politically savvy thing to do. This was one of those occasions. Those who criticize the president for the latter are ignoring the former at their own peril.

Surprise!. Power Line covers the surprise visit by President Bush to Baghdad. Here's the Reuters coverage. Already we're hearing the criticisms by the Democrats, with no doubt more to come in the days ahead. How much did the trip cost... [Wizblog]

Poor Babies!  Hillary's trip got blasted off the front page and the whining is already starting.  I bet if she was president all that money would be spent on worthwhile trips like going shopping in Paris with Chelsea.  Captain Poopdeck

Looks like the Rags in Canada might not get to stone their woman afterall!

Binding arbitration and Islamic law:

Canadian judges soon will be enforcing Islamic law, or Sharia, in disputes between Muslims, possibly paving the way to one day administering criminal sentences, such as stoning women caught in adultery. . . .
Canada . . . is preparing for its 1 million-strong Muslim minority to be under the authority of a Sharia system enforced by the Canadian court system, according to the Canadian Law Times. .........

.......I don't see the problem with extending the same rights to people who want to have their civil cases decided under Islamic law. If the parties don't want to have their cases decided that way, then they don't have to agree to binding arbitration. Nothing in the Law Times article suggests, for instance, that Muslims would by Canadian law be required to submit their disputes to such arbitration panels, and I would be quite shocked if there was such a requirement.
Nor do I see any likelihood that this would indeed "pav[e] the way to one day administering criminal sentences, such as stoning women caught in adultery." American courts have enforced civil arbitration agreements for a long time, and it has by no means paved the way for enforcement of other systems' laws (laws completely different from America's own) in criminal cases. Voluntary resolution of civil cases and mandatory resolution of criminal cases are vastly different matters. I see no reason why allowing parties to agree that their civil disputes be resolved using Islamic law (or British law or California law) would somehow lead the government to insist that criminal matters be enforced using some other system's law.

New Alcohol Litigation: David Boies III, son of the...  famed litigator, has filed a class-action suit (in conjunction with his father's law firm) on behalf of parents and guardians of underage drinkers and children subjected to alcohol advertising "alleging that many prominent members of the alcohol industry negligently targeted underage drinkers in their advertising," the WSJ reports (link requires subscription). From the story: The suit is reminiscent of legal claims made against the tobacco industry for its marketing practices. Virtually all those early suits were settled or thrown out of court, but their contentions began to gain momentum, especially when the litigation produced company documents through discovery that appeared to back up the claims. The eventual outcome was a 1998 settlement between cigarette makers and state attorneys general that prohibits a host of advertising practices as well as calling for major payments to the states by the industry. Interestingly enough, Miller Brewing Company is not among the named defendants in the suit. Although Boies claims this is because Miller is not one of the "more egregious" actors in the industry, the WSJ notes that Miller has been a client of Boies, Schiller & Flexner in the past.

ah - so.....I was wondering when this was going to start?  I have been amazed that those who would suck the blood out of American life waited so long to go after the booze industry.  I expected them to take it up right after they milked tobacco for all they could get.  I guess they got so much, they had to take a long vacation to spend all of it.  Now it's time for another paycheck on the backs of the American consumer.  Captain Poopdeck

NEW MATH. Hi everybody. I’m back. I just finished a lengthy post explaining why I’ve been away, the personal demons I was... [Eject! Eject! Eject!]

He's back with great stuff as usual.  Captain Poopdeck

For thirty years now, since 1973, we have been consistently teaching the world an object lesson on the nature of the modern American mindset, and that lesson is this:

We are fierce and terrible in battle. But kill a few dozen -- at most, a few hundred – of us, and we will turn tail and run for home. For all our skill in combat, the American people are weak and decadent, bullies and cowards without the guts for a real fight.

We have been teaching our enemies this variable for a long time now: Somalia, Lebanon, Vietnam, and various smaller engagements. And they have adjusted their calculations accordingly. Duck when facing us in battle, then grind us down with guerrilla actions until we throw in the towel and go home.

We have not just been teaching our enemies this theory. We have been training them in its use. And they have adjusted their strategy correspondingly, with very satisfactory results. And if killing a few hundred American Soldiers overseas can accomplish such wonders, should we really be surprised that they salivated at the thought of what killing a few tens of thousands here at home would bring?

rednecks. I call myself a "redneck," but I really don't like that term, and to tell the truth, I don't qualify.... [Gut Rumbles]

Got a flash bulletin for you Rob.  Redneck is not a derogatory term anymore with myself and most people I work with.  I have a lot more to say about it but I'm still tuckered out from the Redneck Thanksgiving at the Poopdecks house yesterday.  I will need a couple more naps to catch up so maybe tomorrow.

Thanks for the Acidlanche and stay tuned.  Captain Poopdeck

Why "Cowboy" Is A Compliment. I know what his detractors will say; I know every note and chord they'll strike. And I don't give a flying shite, either. George Bush acted like a leader today. He did what Presidents should do - demostrate the willingness to face the dangers that they send the country's soldiers off to face.

I have my issues with George W. Some of his stances homeland security and personal freedoms scare me. But I think he is a great man, in my heart of hearts. He's not stupid or slow - even the European media copped to that after his visit to Britain. What he did today took guts, it took force of personality, it took chutzpah and cojones. I'm glad he's the President right now; I think America needed him. The last sentence of this post pretty much sums it up.

WRIGHT 'FLYER' DAMAGED DURING REHEARSALS [AOPA]
It happened to the Wright brothers at Kill Devil Hills, too, only in reverse order. After a successful flight on November 20, the Wright Flyer built by The Wright Experience of Warrenton, Virginia, pitched solidly into the ground during takeoff on Tuesday, damaging the lower spar and some supporting structures called uprights. The engine and drive chain were not damaged, and pilot Terry Queijo–an airline captain–was not injured. The aircraft had reached a ground speed of only a few miles per hour when one wing lifted up and the craft dove to the ground. The Wright brothers crashed the first Flyer on December 14, 1903, before its successful flight on December 17. Wright Experience founder Ken Hyde said he hopes to have the Flyer repaired by today, November 28. It is scheduled to fly at 10:35 a.m. on December 17 before an anticipated 35,000 people. Thirty channels of data from a "black box" aboard the Flyer built by Vigyan of Hampton, Virginia, will be downloaded to see what flight parameters existed at the time of the crash, giving the aircraft's builders another chance to learn about its flight characteristics. "We may have bent some wood, but the data could save somebody's neck later," Hyde said. Photo courtesy of The (Raleigh) News & Observer/Travis Long.
