Read it. Read it. Read it..

Michael Crichton hits another home run. I haven't even finished it yet, but even the bit I've read is worth...

[Helloooo chapter two!]

I agree.  Once I started reading I couldn't stop.  A small excerpt is below........CP

In 1993, the EPA announced that second-hand smoke was "responsible for
approximately 3,000 lung cancer deaths each year in nonsmoking adults," and
that it " impairs the respiratory health of hundreds of thousands of
people." In a 1994 pamphlet the EPA said that the eleven studies it based
its decision on were not by themselves conclusive, and that they
collectively assigned second-hand smoke a risk factor of 1.19. (For
reference, a risk factor below 3.0 is too small for action by the EPA. or
for publication in the New England Journal of Medicine, for example.)
Furthermore, since there was no statistical association at the 95%
confidence limits, the EPA lowered the limit to 90%. They then classified
second-hand smoke as a Group-A Carcinogen.

This was openly fraudulent science, but it formed the basis for bans on
smoking in restaurants, offices, and airports. California banned public
smoking in 1995. Soon, no claim was too extreme. By 1998, the Christian
Science Monitor was saying that "Second-hand smoke is the nation's
third-leading preventable cause of death." The American Cancer Society
announced that 53,000 people died each year of second-hand smoke. The
evidence for this claim is nonexistent.

Mad Dean Disease. Once again, gentle reader, Howard Dean demonstrates to all why he is unfit to be president.

Democratic presidential candidate Howard Dean said he wants Osama bin Laden to get the death penalty, seeking to minimize fallout from a New Hampshire newspaper story in which he was quoted as saying the terror leader's guilt should not be prejudged. ... The former...

Physics made simple......

 Simple Harmonic Motion
Simple harmonic motion is typified by the motion of a mass on a spring when it is subject to the linear elastic restoring force given by Hooke's Law. The motion is sinusoidal in time and demonstrates a single resonant frequency.

I appreciate it when they simplify things for people like me.
Thanks Bob

[Gut Rumbles]

Reading the above post by Acidman caused me to think about my Great Grandfathers.  Both lived to be 105 years old.  Neither died of old age.

My Great Grandfather on my mothers side came over from Germany at an early age to find a better life for his new family.  They homesteaded in SE North Dakota.  It was common for young boys in Germany in those days to begin drinking and smoking at around 12 to 14 years of age.  I was fortunate to be able to watch him in the last 15 years of his life so I know what the other family members told me was true.

He smoked a pipe and cigars and drank two or three (four on holidays) shots of straight whiskey every day of his life from the age of 14.  He lived his entire life on the farm.  The food was extremely high in fat and colestorol content.  They did all their own butchering.  The huge majority of the meat was pork since pigs were raised strictly for the purpose of eating and meat from cattle was considered more of a luxury.  Everything was cooked in lard and all the fat drippings were saved and reused.  When products like Crisco came on the market he refused to eat anything cooked in them.  He consumed ten eggs a day.  Six at breakfast and another four in egg sandwiches at lunch.  The bread was always thickly spread with real butter.  He drank only buttermilk and only warm - never cooled.

I would watch him eat and was always amazed that he could consume such huge quantities of food every day and never change from his same 150 pounds.

He worked everyday of his life on the farm till he was in his 90's and would not stop till in desperation the family moved him to town.

There he insisted on having the bedroom at the top of the stairs and only began to use a cane the last few years of his life.  It was those stairs that finally took his life.

His eyesight was good till the end.  Hearing was a problem but no other physical ailments that any family member can remember.  No one can ever remember him having a cold or the flu.  His diet remained exactly the same till the end.  Who knows how long he could have lived if he had not insisted on the room at the top of the stairs.

After he died from the fall the medical center asked the family if they could do an autopsy on the heart for a research project.  They found that his 105 year old heart was still strong and had no trace of buildup.  They said there was no reason he could not have continued to live for many years.

The other Great Grandfather had a very similar life and died in a car accident while coming home from the funeral of another family member.

Whenever I hear all the obsessing about good eating and living in todays world I always remember these two men.  How did they do it without the help of a low fat, low colestorol diet?  How did they do it with all that smoke filling the room and their lungs?  How did they do it with all the alcohol consumption?  How did they do it riding in automobiles with no safety features?  How did they do it with all that DDT they used on the farm?  How did they do it with no government inspection of their meat and no one testing their well water?

How did they do it?

WHY SOCIALISM IS ALWAYS BAD.

The main argument for all of these "social programs" is that they help poorer families get ahead. "Working families" may, for example, need subsidized daycare. Mom and dad are having a tough time making ends meet as it is without having to pay for a babysitter or daycare.

But what's causing the cost of living to increase so much that these families can't "get ahead?" Surprise! Social programs! Guess what? When you implement national daycare, socialized medicine, prescription drug benefits, minimum wage, subsidized elder care, your taxes are going to go through the roof.

Happy Kwanzaa

He is a convicted felon – sentenced five years after inventing Kwanzaa for torturing two black women by whipping them with electrical cords and beating them with a karate baton after stripping them naked. He placed in the mouth of one of the victims a hot soldering iron, also scarring her face with the device. He put one of her big toes in a vise, and detergent and running water in both of their mouths.

Sounds like the kind of guy I would want making up holidays for me to celebrate! CP
