The only place I was ever sure I could find a copy of the Greater Greensboro Observer was at Bessemer Curb Market near here.  I could never find one at any other of the normal alt-weekly dissimination points I frequent - such as Mayberry, Elizabeth's Pizza and the like.

This week, no GGO anywhere I have looked.  Not even at the Curb Market.  I even went so far as to search out a copy at the Friendly Center Barnes & Noble when I was fetching my kids from there last night.  All the other freebie papers were there including last week's Rhino, Go Triad, ESP.... but no GGO.  The damn thing wasn't at Tex and Shirley's either.

Now I'm no marketing genius but I see it like this: Sparce distribution equals sparce readership equals sparce revenue which equals sparce life-span.  If my recent procurement experiences are any indication, investors (County Commissioner) Mike Barber and company will need deep pockets all the way to their ankles to keep the ink flowing on the start-up weekly.

A few weeks ago they made the extraordinary move of changing their publication date from Wednesday to Tuesday without even so much as a mention of their intentions.  Maybe they have now moved to Friday, I dunno.  Maybe this is all part of a grand scheme... you know, move it around... mix it up... like the golftourneypreviouslyknownas GGO, before them.  I can tell you this however, ... if they keep moving the the release  date and screwing around by not having their paper available at their pitifully few distribution points, folks will forget about the new GGO just like they did the old one.

Perhaps the GGO's well heeled investors are counting on the paper's slick website to boost readership, advertising and distribution but that doesn't look very promising either.  If I were coming as soon and for as long as their website, I would be a poster boy for Cialis.

In the view of some Aycock Middle School students who put up a website recently - next year's proposed school uniform policy for their school is quite "heinous".

Aycock's administration has sent a letter home to every family who will be attending the school next year telling them that there will be a SMOD (standard mode of dress, aka school uniform) policy in force for the upcoming academic year.  These students are obviously not pleased about the situation.

I am not sure exactly who Linda and Emily are but they had the good sense to quote extensively from the information found on this blog.  One of their favorite posts was about what happened at a recent school board meeting

Despite claims to the contrary, there has been a lot of parental opposition to implementation of the policy - mainly because of the way in which the Aycock administration chose to gather "input" from the school's community.  Many are also wondering what's going on because the current School Board policy states that the administration "respects a student's right to choose his or her style of dress or appearance".  School uniforms seem a long way from such a "right".

This controversy is not over, not by a long shot.

If you still haven't made up your mind about the issue - here is a bunch of  links to articles and studies concerning school uniforms.
